Amylase Testing
Amylase is an enzyme that helps your body digest carbohydrates.
This enzyme is made mainly in your pancreas, or the glands that
make saliva. When your pancreas becomes diseased or
inflamed, amylase gets into your blood.
Amylase may be tested by
taking a sample of blood or urine. The test is
usually given to either diagnose or monitor pancreas disease, or
to detect problems with your digestive system. The test
may be performed if you are suffering from:
-
Chronic pancreatitis
-
Diabetic ketoacidosis
-
Pancreatic pseudocyst
Certain drugs may affect your
amylase test levels, they include:
-
Aspirin
-
Birth control pills
-
Cholinergic medications
-
Corticosteroids
-
Methyldopa
-
Codeine
-
Morphine
-
Pentazocine
