Electrolyte Panel
Testing
This test is used to measure
the levels of electrolytes and carbon dioxide in your blood.
You may be familiar with the electrolytes, because they are
often found in sports drinks. They are minerals such as
sodium or potassium that replenish your body's water and
electrolyte levels after water loss (through exercise or
illness). These minerals keep your body fluids in balance, and
help with body and brain function.
This test may be ordered by
your doctor as part of a routine health checkup, or to diagnose
medical conditions. They are also given to find out if any
medicine that you have taken has changed your electrolyte
levels.
The electrolyte panel
measures your blood levels of the following:
-
Sodium
-
Potassium
-
Chloride
-
Carbon Dioxide
