Ferritin
Testing
Ferritin is a protein that stores iron and releases it in your
body at controlled amounts to prevent iron deficiency or
overload. A ferritin test is done to determine if your
body has too much or too little iron.
When a
complete blood count shows that your
hemoglobin and hematocrit are low, and your red blood cells are
smaller and paler than normal, it's possible that you have an
iron deficiency. Symptoms of long-term iron deficiency may
include:
-
Headaches
-
Weakness
-
Dizziness
-
Chronic fatigue
More serious iron deficiency
can lead to ringing in the ears, feeling drowsy, chest pain, leg
pains, shock, and shortness of breath.
When iron levels are too high
and become toxic, symptoms may include:
-
Abdominal Pain
-
Joint Pain
-
Feeling Weak
-
Lower sex drive
