Hepatitis B lab test in Baton Rouge

Hepatitis B Lab Testing Services

Whether a doctor has suggested that you be tested for Hepatitis B, or you simply want to know more about your own health, we're here to help. This test is available at our labs in Baton Rouge and surrounding areas.

Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by a virus. If the infection becomes chronic (lasts longer than six months), it can increase your risk of liver cancer, failure, or scarring.

Hepatitis B symptoms may include fever, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, feeling tired, dark urine, joint pain, pale stool, and yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice). In some cases, your doctor may recommend that you be tested for hepatitis, even if you don't show any of those symptoms.

There are high-risk categories for people who may have hepatitis:

  • People who are in close contact with someone infected with hepatitis

  • People who were not vaccinated, with parents from countries with a high rate of Hepatitis.

  • Women who are pregnant

  • People who need a strong immune system for other illness

  • People infected with HIV

The Hepatitis B blood test is used to:

Find markers of Hepatitis infection.  It's used to look for antibodies that your body makes to fight off infection, or to look for genetic material that can cause hepatitis.  Uses for the test include:

  • To detect acute hepatitis B infection: hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc), IgM and sometimes hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)

  • To diagnose chronic HBV hepatitis: HBsAg, hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA, and sometimes HBeAg

  • To monitor chronic hepatitis B infection and its treatment: HBsAg, hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg), hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) IgG, hepatitis B e antibody (anti-HBe) IgG and HBV DNA

  • To detect previous exposure to hepatitis B, in a person who is immune compromised (when the virus can become reactivated): hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) total and anti-HBs

Other reasons for the test including the need to screen for hepatitis B infection in blood donors, at-risk people, to detect previous infection, or find out if someone is a carrier. Some states also recommend screening for anyone who has possibly picked up an infection through a cut or scrape.
