Herpes II Testing
This test may be done if you have a blister or vesicle on your
genitals. This is opposed to Type 1 Herpes, in which
blisters appear on your lips. In some cases, people with
Type 2 Herpes may have blistering on their lips. Testing may also be done
on pregnant mothers and newborns, if the baby shows signs of
Herpes infection such as lesions on the skin.
It's estimated that as many
as one in five adults in America have been exposed to Type 2
Herpes. It can be spread through sexual contact, or from a
mother to her baby during birth.
As many as two-thirds of
people infected with Type 2 Herpes may show no symptoms.
The first signs of Herpes II is a cluster of blisters in your
genital area, such as the head of the penis, anus, labia or
cervix. These blisters spread, break, and then crust over
within days to weeks. The sores can become painful and
itchy, and the fluid released from them is infectious.
Other symptoms may include:
-
Pain while urinating
-
Vaginal discharge
-
Urethral discharge
-
Swollen lymph nodes
-
Headache
-
Fever & Chills
