Prealbumin Testing
This test is ordered to help doctors detect and diagnose
malnutrition in people who are ill. A lack of protein can
affect your body's ability to heal and fight infection.
Children who with a protein deficiency may have stunted growth.
This test is often done
before surgery is performed, on patients who are chronically
ill, or on patients who are hospitalized. Proper nutrition
before surgery helps to avoid complications. If a test
determines that someone is malnourished, proper steps may be
taken before the surgery. The test is also used for people
who receive intravenous treatments, or people treated for kidney
disease.
