PT / INR Testing
Prothrombin time (PT) is used to determine the ability of your
blood to properly clot when you are bleeding. It's
commonly done before surgical procedures.
International Normalized Ratio (INR) monitors how effective
blood-thinning drugs are, such as Coumadin. When someone
has ongoing inappropriate clotting, a blood thinner is often
prescribed. This often includes people who have had
strokes, heart attacks, or deep vein thrombosis.
Your PT/INR may be checked if
you are taking a blood thinner, or if people who do not take
blood thinners suffer from bleeding disorders (nosebleeds,
bruising, heavy menstruation, bleeding gums, or blood in your
stool and urine). In some cases, the PT is recommended by
a doctor when surgery is going to be performed, to make sure
that your blood will clot properly during the procedure.
