Erythrocyte
Sedimentation Rate - ESR Testing
An ESR is done to detect conditions related to acute and chronic
inflammation. This may include cancers, autoimmune
diseases, and infections. Because an ESR doesn't show your
doctor exactly where your inflammation is, or what's causing it,
the test is often done with other tests.
If it's believed that a
condition or disease is causing an inflammation in your body, an
ESR may be recommended by your doctor. The inflammation
may be caused by arthritis. The following symptoms may
lead to this test being ordered:
-
Headaches
-
Pelvis pain
-
Shoulder pain
-
Neck pain
-
Weight loss
-
Stiffness in your joints
